Remove 다 from the dictionary form and add 아요 or 어요 to build selected polite present forms.

Stem plus 아요 or 어요

Start from the dictionary form and remove 다 to find the stem. For the regular patterns here, a last stem vowel ㅏ or ㅗ takes 아요; most other vowels take 어요. 먹다 becomes 먹어요. This lesson teaches selected forms, not every contraction or irregular verb.

먹다 → 먹어요

meokda → meogeoyo — to eat → eat (polite)
